Graphic saying "5 things to do for halloween during lockdown" with three little kids dressed as ghosts underneath

Most things this year haven't quite gone to plan, and with Halloween just about less than a week away, it seems that too isn't going to be the same as all the other years.

However, I personally don't want to think I've missed out on another thing this year, so that's why I've racked my brain to come up with five ways that you can do this Halloween even if you are confined to your home.

5 THINGS TO DO FOR HALLOWEEN WHILE IN LOCKDOWN

ZOOM PARTY

As much as by now I'm sure we are all sick of online lectures, for the most part, video and voice calling our friends (and family) is the only way we are able to socialise. And with even more places locking down as this pandemic continues, the forecast for any parties happening this Halloween doesn't seem bright. So I suggest instead zoom parties. Honestly, for me I would probably prefer it a little more sat in my room in my PJs, but for those of you who want to drink and hang out with friends maybe this would be a decent enough substitute for those crowded and loud dance floors.

Movie Evenings

Despite us all being stuck to staying in our rooms, we can still continue the traditions of watching scary (or as scary as Disney can go for me) movies on Halloween. Either find a movie on Netflix and get everyone joined in on Netflix Party, or get everyone on over to Discord where you can watch a few movies together.

Do It For The Gram

We might not be able to get dressed up and go out, but this year we can still get dressed up and hang out in our rooms. I know I don't like to waste a good makeup moment, so maybe if you get dressed up this Halloween why not give yourself a photoshoot, and share those looks with your friends over on Instagram. If you do post anything I'd love to be tagged in them!

Bake Some Treats (or tricks)

Going way back to one of my first few years of blogging I created a post on baking some ghost biscuits, baking is always a fun activity to do when (or even when your not) confided to your own home. From cookies to cakes, you can bake anything and make it Halloween theme. If you need some ideas Pinterest is a great place to find some Halloween treat inspiration. I have a board set up for them if you want some quick inspiration.

Take A Break

I for one know I'm terrible at actually taking a break, and as much as I try to a take a breather my mind doesn't really shut off. But with the stresses that this year has brought to everyone, maybe using Halloween as an excuse to pause for a second and let yourselves breathe wouldn't be a bad thing. Give yourself a treat!

Writing this I realised I miss the days of trick'n'treating and that now I don't really do much for Halloween. But what do you normally do for Halloween? And what plans do you have for this year?

Ecological health, at present, is a factor of great importance for humanity. It is the health of the future that we must all take care of. Imagine a world where the environment is so polluted that you can't even breathe. Even the skin cannot be exposed to the sun because the radiation effects are unimaginable. It's sad to think that one day we could come to this. It is annoying to realize that today many people do not care about protecting the environment. Our health and hygiene depend, to a greater extent, on everything that surrounds us. By taking care of nature we take care of ourselves, without realizing it. Ecological health and environment should be the premise of a new lifestyle for all.

If you didn't realise by now I am a sucker for tips'n'tricks to make my life easier, especially during this time of studying online. So with that, I have found myself adding quite a few new chrome extensions to the web browser to try and ease the stress that third year is bringing to my door. Since I'm sure many of you also use Chrome I thought it might be of some help to make a post about my favourites of these chrome extensions.

university room tour

After skipping this series for a year since I was on my placement year, I'm back for another addition to my University Room Tours.

This year I was trying to decorate my room more since I have to spend pretty much 24/7 inside these four walls, however, my set up isn't all too different from first year and second year. Even so, I thought it was about time I uploaded this post, and possible have your opinions and ideas on how I can make my room feel more like my room than just another university dorm room.

Once again this years post is more of a picture post rather than a more wordy post, but I hope you liked seeing a sneak peek into my dorm room.

What's your favourite spot in your university room? What have you done to make it feel more homely this year?

best new ipad note taking feature for ios14 graphic

Recently for our apple products, there has been an update on iOS. And with this new update, the iOS14 brings a whole bunch of features that are perfect for taking our digital notes a lot more smoothly. So I'm here today to gather a list of all the new features for you to try out for yourself.

BEST IPAD NOTE-TAKING FEATURES FOR IOS14

Scribble

This feature is a great addition in making the process of working with an apple pencil that much more efficient and smoother. Scribble lets you write in areas you would normally type and those words are changed to text. So say if you wanted to search something up you could write into the search engine what you are looking for instead of typing it, meaning you don't have to put your pencil down at all. Other features of this are crossing out letters or words that you want to be deleted or adding a verticle line between where you want a space if one is missing. And it even works in Goodnotes, for example in the textboxes or even in the search bar when looking up keywords in your work.

Shape Recognition

This is when you try and draw a shape such as a star or heart your iPad will automatically sharpen and perfect the shape if you hold your pen to the screen after you finish drawing. For those of you who use Procreate this is a similar feature to what you can do in that app, however now you can also use this tool in other apps like the iPad notes or Goodnotes. Great for those who like to include illustrations in their work or even just to doodle on the side; like how we used to doodle in the margins of our school workbooks.

Selection of Handwritten Notes

This works like the lasso tool in Goodnotes, where you can select those notes that you have written by hand. However, now the iPad recognises handwritten text from any drawings that you might also have included in your notes. This smart selection then allows you to treat the text as typed text and you can even paste your handwritten words as typed text in other apps such as google docs; giving a lot more freedom to the notes you write by hand.

More Digital Note Tips:

Data Detection

This is a new and quick way to add dates and events to your calendar from wherever you are taking your lecture notes. Say you professor gave out an assignment due date during your lecture, instead of flickering between different apps, the ios14 update means your iPad can now detect these and lets you add them to you calendar from the notes app that you are on. This also works with phone numbers, emails and addresses too.

Quick Styles

For those of you who do type, either instead of or as well as handwriting your notes, there is also the new quick way of switching between different text looks, with the boldface, italics, title, heading and more now located on the Aa button on the keyboard, making it smoother to personalise your own notes.

These are just some of the new additions that come along with the iOS14 update. I'm sure by now you've seen nearly everyone and their grandmothers making their phone screens look ethically pleasing but now I hope these tips too help you make the use of your iPad (or any other Apple device) more fun and efficient.

I don't post much about my notes and such on my personal/blogging Instagram, however, if you want to see more of my university life or how I'm getting along with taking notes digitally I do have a studygram account that you can follow me on, @she_studies_astro. I'm trying to get into using my studygram more again as some kind of motivation to keep my notes up to date and looking presentable.

Have you found any new features for iOS devices that you love, share them below? Or if you use a different device, what are your favourite tips for taking notes digitally?

How to make university less stressful graphic

I'm not going to promise you that university won't be stressful. It seriously is at times. But I want to put together some tips that might help to reduce some of that stress even if it is only the smallest amount for even the shortest of times.

HOW TO MAKE UNIVERSITY LESS STRESSFUL

Keep on top of homework

Simple but effective. If you are on top of everything, and not rushing to complete every assignment the night of the deadline alongside revising for the impending exams that also follow deadline season, you'll find yourself not only less stressed about fitting everything in but also you'll be able to give everything you best and all. Meaning those grades will probably come out better.

Revise throughout the year

It's become a common thing to think that students end up cramming everything in for an exam the night before, however, I have never once done that and I've not failed anything yet. Instead, I revise throughout the year. As much as our teachers and professors tell us to consolidate the information from each lesson as we go along and there are many science reports stating that the best time to consolidate the lesson is the night or day after most of us don't take this on board. And to be honest, sometimes all the workload just gets overwhelming which can be stressful all on its own. However, if you revise even just a little throughout the year, say like once a week go over everything you've done that week, by the time exams come around you'll feel a lot calmer about the knowledge that you do actually know.

Make time each week to spend with friends or family

Anybody who can take your mind away from all the stresses of studying. Sometimes one or the other might make things more stressful for you to be around them, but find at least one person who can take your attention away from the work you've got to do even if it is only for a couple of hours each week.

Other University Posts:

Get into a rhythm

Find a schedule that works for you, and keep to it the best you can. Not only will this help to stop you procrastinating but it will also mean that for parts of your day you won't have to use brainpower for choosing what to do since it is already set out for you. And instead, that brainpower can be put towards studying. Even making a meal plan for the week will mean you have one less thing to think and stress about each day.

Have a decent sleep schedule

Be it five hours or ten, find a time length which lets you charge up your batteries without oversleeping and exhausting yourself more. Whatever length of time you chose make sure that you sleep at the same time every day. That pattern will set your body and especially your brain to work at its best throughout the day and therefore you are more likely to have a less stress-filled day.

Whatever you chose from this list, make sure it works for you and how your body works. We are each totally different individuals and work to different rhythms, so how we make university less stressful will always be slightly different.

Even with all these points, there are more ways to reduce stress like watching your favourite TV show or reading a book, what ways asides from the above ones do you use to make university (or college or school) less stressful?

There’s a lot of advice out there tipped to making student life easier. To ride out the exams and coursework while still fitting in time for friends, family and fun. But there’s little around after university and the simple fact is, some people do struggle.

The job market is intense, especially at the moment with so many people out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic. So what do you do when you finish? Maybe you haven’t got that defined career path and that’s fine. At the end of the day, everyone is different and will approach the end of student life in a different way. What works for someone else might not quite work for you. When you see tips and advice, make sure you take them with a pinch of salt because they may not work for you. Whatever you do, good luck!

Go Into A Vocation

You don’t have to follow the academic route just because you went to university. A lot of people go to simply get a degree before following something they are passionate about. This applies even if you studied a degree designed to get you into a field of practice like law for example. Or you might even want to do something else which requires a qualification, like a Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation. Whatever it is, try not to be peer pressured by others. You have a few options available and you don’t need to just jump to the nearest opportunity unless you’re really desperate.

Further Education

Maybe academia is for you. Maybe you love university and aren’t ready to quit. The best thing you can do is go on to do your masters or doctorate. Though there is the option of going and working for a few years before coming back to it, but for some, it doesn’t happen like that. You get used to the money, life happens, you buy a house, kids, etc, and your attention can be taken away from studying. Doing it now when you’re already in university and already committed to it can also mean that your head is still in study mode. It doesn’t mean you have to stay at your current university either. You can go somewhere else which has a more narrowed downfield of study, which is more aligned with your interest. Take time and look at what's best for you before applying.

Take Some Time Away

University can be quite intense. It can certainly tire you out. You might not want to go straight into a busy 9-5 job which saps all of your energy. Instead, you might want to relax for a little while. Do it now, when you have the chance. You can get an hourly paid, low skilled job and take stock of what you want to do and how you want to approach it. You might want to move somewhere else for a year to see what it’s like. Or you could just stay local and reconnect with some old friends before taking your step out into the world. Either way, it’s certainly something you can consider and the life experience you get from it can help you succeed down the line.

I've been trying to come up with ways to incorporate my enthusiasm for sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyles into my blog more for a while now. So as I usually do, I came up with an idea just as I was trying to fall asleep the other night, and that idea was to just give a more personal insight into how my journey towards sustainable living is going.

Around this time last year, I wrote a post checking in with all the resolutions I had made in the new year of 2019. Checking up whether I had completed any or if there were any I could work on in the second part of the year. So to get myself back into the blogging game, since I have taken such a long break, I thought I could write a similar kind of post but this time for the things that I had hoped 2020 would bring.

There is no denying that college and university can be some of the best years of your life. You can make some amazing friends, you can go on to see the world or explore an educational path in more detail and your life can feel enriched with all of the possibilities. However, you may be thinking about what next after college or after university. Some people are never sure what step to take or what to consider.

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy inside your own houses!

Well, everyone, we've survived a quarter of the year so far, and though I bet we are all wondering how we made it, I thought this week I would try and bring some normality back on to my blog with a bullet journal set up.

When I was planning my study abroad blog posts before I flew out here I honestly thought by one month into my four-month stay I would have far more things to say that were actually interesting. But the reality this semester is nowhere near as much fun as I was expecting.

Being it the third month of the year already I thought I would have done and achieved a lot more, alas the only thing I've seemed to do so far is spending far more time on my bullet journal. Not my fault entirely, the semester for me doesn't start until March 16th anyway.

There are many different ways to enjoy a vacation, but a few key “templates” tend to dominate. People will generally prefer to go somewhere warm rather than somewhere cold. Trips will typically be somewhere in the region of a week or two. Often, the focus of the trip will be to relax, enjoy some good food, and maybe see some local museums; but no matter where we decide to take our holiday, we can always find something beautiful. If we stay in our own country, it’s vital that we have a reliable car that won’t let us down. You should ensure you make the most of Vauxhall MOT Test or Service online booking and make sure you’re ready for the road whatever the weather! Here are some tips for making your vacation a bit more of an adventure and getting the most out of your holiday this year!

As we live in a society that is becoming more and more conscious every day of its impact on the natural environment, we take many more hours of our time searching for items that fit into our new criteria for when purchasing.

I for one am hunting high and low for products for my skin that are not only cruelty-free but also plastic-free, and if possible vegan. So coming across Whitford was an amazing chance.

Being a university student and living away from home for almost three quarters of the year, one thing you have to pick up rather quickly if you don't know how to already is how to cook for yourself. However, after nearly three years of living off my own cooking, the same meals can become rather boring.

When you are at university, it's important that you do find ways to remain productive. If you fail to do this, then you will struggle to stay on top of your workload and complete those deadlines. If you are lucky enough to go on a placement year and truly experience the industry you are training for you may find it a shock to the system. Either because it's going into a working arena or because it's not what you pictured it to be. With this in mind, a lot of people tend to fall into teaching as a second choice career. But when we don't get on board with our subject and it's too late to change we may think about teaching because it's a sturdy career choice. So for those people that are feeling somewhat aimless in their degree is teaching a good choice? It is, and here are a couple of reasons why.

As a young adult, one of the biggest battles we have is with money. Nobody teaches us how to manage it. Our parents might have given us a little bit of advice, or perhaps moaned, to put some of our paychecks into savings. But as a young adult, there’s nothing we want more than the freedom to spend our own money. So it leads to some bad mistakes during the teenage and early 20 years. But then we start to realise what the real world is about. We outgrow our own homes and are driven to save money to move out. Some of you will have saved that little bit longer in order to have a mortgage, some of you will have rented. Whatever route that’s taken, we all end up at the same junction. The junction where money is hard to control, and often unmanageable. When you get yourself into certain financial situations, it can be so hard to get out of them. So, we’re going to explore why it’s so hard to manage money, and hopefully give you some tips on how you can manage it!

I've barely written about books the last couple of years, mainly because when trying to grow a blog they say to pick a niche and well book reviews don't seem to fit smoothly into whatever mine is. But I'm at the point where I'm just going to throw caution to the wind because reading is something I love and since I blog about my passions on here then I should really be mentioning books more often than I do.
